Red Bull fined $7 million for breaching Formula One's cost cap

The governing body of Formula One has imposed a $7 million fine on Red Bull as punishment for overspending the 2021 cost cap by $1.8 million during Max Verstappen's first championship season. They will also be penalised with a 10% reduction in permitted aerodynamic research, the FIA confirmed on Friday at the Mexico City Grand Prix.

The decision, however will not satisfy Red Bull rivals who had called for harsh penalties ranging from stripping Max Verstappen of last year's title, a reduction in future Red Bull spending, and any punishment that would hurt the team competitively.

The fine has to be paid within 30 days and the car development time restrictions have been applied for 2023. Red Bull has already won the second F1 title with Verstappen and their fifth constructors' championship last weekend, where Verstappen registered a record-equalling 13th win of the year.
