Novak Djokovic set to miss US Open over vaccination status

Novak Djokovic's US Open hopes suffered another blow after the tournament organisers said that they would respect the United States government's rules on the Covid-19 vaccine.

The US require non-citizens to be fully vaccinated against coronavirus to enter the country, meaning Djokovic, who has made it repeatedly clear that he will not take the vaccine, will not be given an entry.

A statement from the US Open, which does not have its own vaccination rules, read: 'The US Open does not have a vaccination mandate in place for players, but it will respect the US government's position regarding travel into the country for unvaccinated non-US citizens.'

Interestingly, almost 12,000 people have signed an online petition calling for the US Tennis Association to work with the country's government to allow Djokovic to compete in the U.S. Open.

As things stand, Djokovic, who recently won the Wimbledon, will not be eligible to play the season's final Grand Slam. The Serbian has often stated that he was willing to forgo trophies to maintain his unvaccinated status, saying he wants to control what he puts in his body.
