India's Greatest Champions: From World Champion to Olympic Medallist, Magnificent Mary's Journey

A young girl from a small village, who, despite all odds, rose to become an Olympic medalist and a symbol of hope for millions.

This is the extraordinary story of MC Mary Kom - a boxer par excellence and a trailblazer who inspired countless women to chase their dreams, just like she did when she won the bronze at the 2012 London Games.

Mary Kom's journey began with a challenging upbringing. She took up boxing after getting inspired by Dingko Singh’s triumph at the 1998 Asian Games. Balancing work and caring for her siblings wasn't easy, but she remained unwavering in her pursuit. Leaving school early only fueled her determination. She even kept her boxing dreams hidden from her father until she began competing at national championships.

Initially, her parents were against her involvement in boxing, deeming it unsuitable for a young girl. However, Mary Kom defied their expectations and fought her way to the top. She clinched her first World Championship gold medal in Antalya, Turkey in 2002, and from there, her rise was unstoppable.

Marriage and motherhood did bring a brief pause, but after giving birth to twins in 2007, Kom returned to the ring with renewed energy. She continued to excel in World Championships, and it all culminated in her remarkable performance at the 2012 London Olympics. Mary Kom made history as the first Indian woman to compete in boxing at the Olympics, proudly earning a historic bronze medal.

Her achievements didn't end there. In 2014, she became the first Indian female boxer to win a gold medal at the Asian Games. In 2018, she added another accolade by winning gold at the Commonwealth Games.

Mary Kom is the only woman to win the World Amateur Boxing Championship six times and the only female boxer to have medaled in the first seven World Championships. She also became the first amateur athlete to receive the Padma Bhushan.

In 2024, she was appointed as the chef de mission for the Indian contingent to the Paris Olympics, a testament to her enduring legacy, though she later resigned for personal reasons.

Mary Kom's story transcends her victories in the ring. She stands as a symbol of empowerment for women and young girls in India. Her journey has inspired others to take up sports and boxing, believing that they too can achieve greatness.

Her legacy will forever be a shining beacon for all aspiring athletes.
