Formula 1 drivers complain about ‘porpoising’ back pain, FIA to take action

After many drivers, including 7-time world champion Lewis Hamilton complained of back pain due to 'porpoising', Formula 1's governing body the FIA said it has taken steps on safety grounds to reduce the high-speed bouncing.

The FIA has now issued a technical directive to teams setting out how it plans to tackle 'porpoising', which is a ground effect philosophy, where the air is sucked underneath a car to pull it down onto the track at high speed.

It has though caused massive back pains to the drivers, with Hamilton describing the Azerbaijan Grand Prix as the "most painful" he had ever experienced, and many of his rivals have also raised concerns.

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner has voiced his objections in the past and said "the easiest thing is to raise the car", but the teams most affected are reluctant to do so because of the effect it would have on performance.
