Canada Open 2023: Jannik Sinner claims 1st ATP Masters trophy, Jessica Pegula wins 3rd WTA tour title

Jannik Sinner broke new ground on August 13 when he captured his first ATP Masters 1000 title at the National Bank Open.

The Italian produced a clean-hitting display in Toronto to earn a 6-4, 6-1 victory against Alex de Minaur in one hour and 30 minutes.

The 21-year-old is the youngest champion at the Canadian Masters 1000 since then-20-year-old Alexander Zverev lifted the trophy in 2017.

With this win, Sinner will be the new world no. 6 starting August 14.

Meanwhile on the women's tour, Jessica Pegula routed Liudmila Samsonova 6-1, 6-0 on the same day to win the National Bank Open for her third career WTA Tour victory.

She topped Samsonova in 49 minutes after the 15th-seeded Russian beat third-seeded Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan 1-6, 6-1, 6-2 earlier on August 13 in a rain-delayed semifinal.

Pegula is the first American to win the event since Serena Williams in 2013.
