Due to the rising Covid-19 cases in Melbourne, the Victorian government announced on Thursday that the crowds at the Australian Open will be capped at 50 per cent.

Those entering will have to abide by the Covid-19 regulations and face masks will be mandatory for all, except when eating or drinking. Melbourne reported 37,169 new cases of Covid-19 on Thursday and 25 deaths. Tennis Australia said the 50% cap is only applied for ticket sales at the Rod Laver Arena centre court and the second show court, Margaret Court Arena. 'There are no changes to ground pass access and we still expect to see strong crowds', it added.

The first Grand Slam of the year starts January 17.
