The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) included Butt in the national selection panel ahead of Pakistan's five-match T20I series against New Zealand next year.&nbsp;
The 39-year-old, who made a successful return to cricket in 2016 after serving a five-year ban for spot-fixing, has been named along with former teammates Kamran Akmal and Rao Iftikhar Anjum as consultant members to the recently-appointed chief selector, Wahab Riaz.
Butt was suspended for five years for his role in spot-fixing during the Pakistan and England Test match in August 2010.
After returning to cricket in 2016, Butt enjoyed a lot of success as a batter and captain in domestic competitions but was never considered for the national team again even though his partner in crime, Muhammad Amir was fast-tracked back into the Pakistan side in 2016 by the board.
Butt, a former opener, was last month hired for commentary assignments by the PCB for domestic competitions and is currently busy in the National T20 Championship.
"Their first assignment as consultant members to the chief selector includes the upcoming five-match T20I series against New Zealand, set to commence on 12 January 2024 following the conclusion of the Test tour to Australia,&rdquo; PCB said in a release.
"When not engaged in selection duties, the consultant members may be assigned additional tasks such as conducting skills camps." Butt, Kamran, chief selector Wahab Riaz and former Test pacer, Anjum all played together in the Pakistan team alongside the Director of the Pakistan team, Muhammad Hafeez.
Kamran, in a 15-year career, played 53 Tests, 157 ODIs and 58 T20Is while Butt appeared in 33 Tests, 78 ODIs and 24 T20Is and Anjum played a Test, 62 ODIs and two T20Is from 2004 to 2010.
Butt, Amir and Muhammad Asif were all found guilty of spot-fixing by the national crime agency in the United Kingdom and also served time in jail and the International Cricket Council imposed the bans on them.
Butt, under whose captaincy Pakistan won a Test against Australia at Headingley and one against England at the Oval in 2010, has always complained of being treated unjustly while admitting his remorse over his actions.
Few years years back, then head coach Waqar Younis had also recommended his name for a comeback to the national team, but former captain Shahid Afridi refused to let him make a comeback in the team.

News organisation NDTV reported that parts of the stadium are currently without electricity just hours before the crucial match. The reason behind this unusual situation is an unpaid electricity bill dating back to 2009, amounting to a staggering ₹3.16 crore.
The stadium's electricity connection was severed five years ago due to the outstanding bill, prompting the Chhattisgarh State Cricket Association to secure a temporary connection, stated the report.&nbsp; However, this temporary arrangement only covers the spectators' gallery and boxes, leaving the floodlights during the match reliant on generators.
Raipur Rural Circle in-charge, Ashok Khandelwal, revealed that the Cricket Association has applied to upgrade the temporary connection's capacity from 200 KV to 1 thousand KV. While the application has been approved, work on the upgrade is yet to commence.
The stadium's electricity bill dilemma came to light in 2018 when athletes participating in a half-marathon discovered a lack of electricity supply.
Responsibility for the unpaid power bill has become a point of contention between the Public Works Department (PWD), responsible for stadium maintenance, and the Sports Department, handling remaining expenses.
Multiple notice, No action&nbsp;
Despite receiving multiple notices from the electricity company, neither the PWD nor the Sports Department has made any payments. Since the power connection was cut in 2018, the stadium has hosted three international cricket matches, relying on generators for electricity during significant events.
Chhattisgarh State Cricket Sangh media coordinator, Tarunesh Singh Parihar, expressed scepticism about hosting future international matches due to the persistent issue.
He highlighted the use of generators as an alternative arrangement for significant matches, emphasising the uncertainty surrounding the outstanding electricity bill for stadium lights.

Both Kohli and Rohit requested to be left out of both the T20I series and the ODI series against South Africa, and the BCCI agreed.

Portuguese football star Cristiano Ronaldo was hit with class-action lawsuit seeking at least USD 1 billion in damages for his role in promoting cryptocurrency-related "non-fungible tokens," or NFTs, issued by the beleaguered cryptocurrency exchange Binance.
The lawsuit filed in federal court in the Southern District of Florida Monday alleges that Ronaldo's promotion of Binance was "deceptive and unlawful." Binance's partnership with high-profile figures like Ronaldo, the plaintiffs claim, led them into costly and unsafe investments.
"Evidence now reveals that Binance's fraud was only able to reach such heights through the offer and sale of unregistered securities, with the willing help and assistance of some of the wealthiest, powerful and recognised organisations and celebrities across the globe&mdash;just like Defendant Ronaldo," the suit reads.
Representatives for Ronaldo declined to comment Thursday. Binance, the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange, did not immediately return requests for statement from The Associated Press.
Ronaldo launched his inaugural NFT &ldquo;CR7&rdquo; collection with Binance in November of last year, ahead of the 2022 World Cup. The NFTs &mdash; which had starting prices ranging from the equivalent of about $77 to $10,000 &mdash; featured seven animated statues depicting Ronaldo from iconic moments in his life, from bicycle-kick goals to his childhood in Portugal.

Over the summer, Binance was accused of operating as an unregistered securities exchange and violating a slew of U.S. securities laws in a lawsuit from regulators. The crypto exchange agreed last week to pay a roughly $4 billion settlement and its founder Changpeng Zhao stepped down as CEO and pleaded guilty to a felony related to his failure to prevent money laundering on the platform.
This week's lawsuit against Ronaldo isn't the first time that a celebrity has faced litigation over crypto promotions. Last year, a host of Hollywood and sports stars &mdash; including Larry David and Tom Brady &mdash; were named as defendants in a class-action suit against FTX, which was the second-largest crypto exchange before it collapsed in November 2022. The suit argued that the celebrities' status made them culpable for promoting FTX's failed business model.

It is understood that Hardik Pandya is no longer an automatic choice for T20 captaincy in the T20 World Cup next year if Rohit  Sharma decides to play the shortest format.

Rohit Sharma's request to the BCCI for a break from white-ball cricket in South Africa despite being offered T20 captaincy has been accepted, while Jasprit Bumrah has been named his deputy for the two Tests starting December 26.
Virat Kohli's request for a break from limited-overs games too has been accepted as Suryakumar Yadav and KL Rahul will lead the national team in T20Is and ODIs respectively.
However, it is understood that Hardik Pandya is no longer an automatic choice for T20 captaincy in the T20 World Cup next year if Rohit decides to play the shortest format.
"Rohit has been offered T20 captaincy but he is in UK on a holiday and wants an extended break after four months of gruelling season till end of the World Cup. But as captain, he has the highest respect for the dressing room and if he agrees to lead India in T20 World Cup, he will lead," a BCCI source told PTI on condition of anonymity.
After the T20 World Cup in 2022, Rohit had actually been reluctant to play the shortest format as he focused on 50-over cricket.
Interestingly, most of the players selected for ODIs don't feature either in Tests or T20Is.
Only three players have been selected in all three squads -- Shreyas Iyer, Mukesh Kumar and Ruturaj Gaikwad.
Axar Patel has been dropped from the T20 squad and Ravindra Jadeja is the new T20 vice-captain for the series.
The national selection committee, on expected lines, has not included Kona Bharat in the Test squad as KL Rahul will now don the big gloves in the Test matches.
Rahul as keeper also opens two middle-order slots -- for Shreyas Iyer and reserve batter Gaikwad -- in the Test lineup.
It is understood that Mohammed Shami has a chance to get fit before the Test series starts late in December.
"Shami's injury isn't very serious at the moment and hence he has been kept in the squad. Prasidh Krishna has been kept as his cover just in case.
Ajinkya Rahane, who scored 89 in the World Test Championship final, has probably played his last Test along with Chesteshwar Pujara.
"The two slots that Rahane and Pujara had now belong to Rahul and Iyer. Also, Gill will bat in the middle order and Yashashvi will get a long rope," the source added.
Pacer Umesh Yadav has also played his last Test.
ODI is the least important format right now but looking at the 2025 Champions Trophy, a new-look squad under Rahul will play the 50-over games.
Rajat Patidar, B Sai Sudharshan and Rinku Singh, all with fantastic List A records, are in the ODI squad and will form the nucleus of the next 50-over team.
Kuldeep Yadav, who couldn't be accommodated in the Test squad, is there in both the white-ball squads.
Yuzvendra Chahal, who missed the World Cup, is now back in the 50-over format while Ravi Bishnoi is in the T20 squad.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) recently granted an extension to Dravid and the support staff, ushering in a new chapter for Team India.
During a brief interaction with reporters in Delhi, where he, alongside BCCI chairman Ajit Agarkar, was finalising India's squads for the upcoming T20I, ODI, and Test series against South Africa, Dravid maintained a sense of mystery regarding the tenure of his renewed contract. Despite confirming his continuation as Team India's head coach, the exact duration remains undisclosed.
Addressing the media, Dravid clarified, "Nothing's out officially. I haven't signed anything as yet, so once I get the papers, we will discuss it."&nbsp;
This statement was accompanied by an air of suspense as reporters sought answers before Dravid entered his car.
Speculations suggest that Dravid might lead the team until the T20 World Cup in 2024, presenting both him and India with a third opportunity to clinch a World Cup title in as many years. Notably, India reached the semi-final of the T20 World Cup in 2022 and finished as runners-up in the 2023 ODI World Cup.

Days after the Board of Control for Cricket in India revaled that India's premier pacer Mohammed Shami is receiving medical treatment, it was reported that the 33-year-old is suffering from an ankle issue.

Star pacer Mohammed Shami has developed an ankle condition, which currently requires medical attention, as the Indian team management will hope that he regains fitness in time for the first Test against South Africa starting from December 26 at Centurion.
Shami's name has been kept in the Test squad with a star mark and the BCCI media release stated that he "is currently undergoing medical treatment and his availability is subject to fitness." However, there was no specific information on the nature of the injury as to whether he suffered it on the field or more fitness related.
But it has been learnt that Shami was in Mumbai to consult a sports orthopaedic to diagnose his ankle condition.
"It is not exactly an on-field injury. It is an ankle condition that has developed. Shami came to Mumbai to consult the doctors. He will also go to NCA for rehab and recuperation work.
"The national selectors wouldn't have selected him had there not been a chance of him getting fit in time for the Boxing Day Test," a BCCI source, privy to the development, told PTI on conditions of anonymity.
Shami didn't appear in the first four matches of the recent ODI World Cup due to the team composition requirements.
He got a chance to play in the fifth match after Hardik Pandya tore his left ankle ligament trying to stop a powerful shot on his follow-through in the match against Bangladesh.
Shami ended up getting 24 wickets in seven games and was one of the biggest reasons behind India's sustained dominance for 10 straight games in the showpiece before losing the final to Australia.
"Shami, in fact, came to watch one of Bengal's Vijay Hazare Trophy games as his younger brother Mohammed Kaif is also playing. He seemed to be walking with a slight limp," a Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) source said.
It will be interesting to note whether Shami would play the three-day intra-squad match between India Seniors and India A squads, which is a tune-up for the Tests.
It is also learnt for the time being, Shami won't play white ball games as there are seven Test matches, including five against England at home and the 'Amroha Express' is expected to play a big role in the sub-continental conditions where the ball reverses a lot.
Whether Shami will play next year's T20 World Cup will depend on how he fares in the Indian Premier League, where he has had two good seasons for the Gujarat Titans.

Rafael Nadal will return to playing at the Brisbane International in Australia in January, the 22-time Grand Slam champion said Friday.
&ldquo;After a year of not competing, it is time to come back," Nadal said in a video posted on social media. "It will be in Brisbane in the first week of January. See you there.&rdquo;
The 37-year-old Spaniard has not played on tour since last January, when he hurt his hip flexor during a loss in the second round of the Australian Open.
In May, a little more than a week before the start of the French Open, Nadal announced that he would miss the tournament he&rsquo;s won a record 14 times and wasn&rsquo;t exactly sure when he might return to play.
Nadal had said then that he hoped to compete in 2024, which he expected to be his final season.
&ldquo;You never know how things will turn out,&rdquo; Nadal said at a news conference at the time, &ldquo;but my intention is that next year will be my last year.&rdquo;
He wound up having arthroscopic surgery in June in Barcelona.
Dating to the end of 2022, the Spanish left-hander has lost seven of his past nine matches, including going 1-3 this season.
Nadal's 22 Grand Slam singles titles rank second to Novak Djokovic&rsquo;s 24 for the most among men.

Team India have bagged the 5-match T20I series with a 20-run win against Australia in the 4th T20I as the Indian spinners proved lethal on the night to take the Men in Blue home.
Put to bat first, openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ruturaj Gaikwad &nbsp;gave the side a healthy start. However, wickets at regular intervals saw the team struggle at 111-4 at 13.2 overs.
On came Rinku Singh (46) who along with Jitesh Sharma (35) started piling pressure on the Aussie bowlers and helped the home side post a competitive 174/9 on the board.

Australia's World Cup heroes Travis Head, Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc have all kept their respective base prices in the highest bracket of Rs 2 crore along with out-of-favour India pacer Harshal Patel for the IPL auctions, scheduled in Dubai on December 19.
As per ESPN Cricinfo, franchises have been sent a list of 1166 players, who have registered for the auction.
There are 77 slots up for grabs and 30 of them would be overseas players. The 10 teams can collectively spend Rs 262.95 crore.
New Zealand's Rachin Ravindra, who made everyone stand up and take note with his batting exploits during the World Cup, is priced at Rs 50 lakh but he is expected go at least 15 if not 20 times more than his base price.

The 3-match Test series starts with the first game scheduled in Perth from December 14, followed by 2 more Tests in Melbourne and Sydney from December 26 and January 3 respectively.
Pakistan is currently on the top of the World Test Championship 2023-25 table with 2 wins in 2 matches so far. Australia is currently at the 3rd spot.
