Alcaraz exits Australian Open after fierce battle with Zverev, Medvedev sets up semifinal clash

In a late-night thriller at the Australian Open, Carlos Alcaraz's journey came to an end following a gripping quarterfinal match against Alexander Zverev, who managed to fend off a vigorous comeback from the Spanish sensation. The match concluded at 01:20 local time, with Zverev, the German sixth seed, clinching a victory with scores of 6-1, 6-3, 6-7 (2-7), 6-4 over the second-seeded Alcaraz.

Despite Alcaraz's resurgence in the third set, Zverev's early dominance in the match laid the groundwork for his victory, although he encountered a hiccup when serving for the match at 5-3 in the third set. Alcaraz seized this moment to inject life into his play, but Zverev ultimately secured his win on his second attempt, advancing to a semifinal showdown against Daniil Medvedev.

Medvedev's route to the semifinal was equally challenging, overcoming Poland's ninth seed Hubert Hurkacz in a five-set epic that ended 7-6 (7-4), 2-6, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4. The victory left Medvedev feeling "a bit destroyed," given the intense nearly four-hour battle. Despite the physical toll, Medvedev expressed satisfaction with his performance, emphasizing resilience and the willingness to accept any outcome.

The upcoming semifinal promises an enthralling encounter between Medvedev, the 27-year-old Russian seeking his second Grand Slam title after his 2021 US Open victory, and Zverev, who is on a quest for his maiden major win. This matchup is part of an exciting semifinal lineup, which also features defending champion Novak Djokovic against Italian fourth seed Jannik Sinner
