Nagaland Celebrates National Sports Day, Unveils New Sports Policy

Kohima, Aug 29 (PTI) - On the occasion of National Sports Day, Nagaland celebrated the achievements of 151 distinguished sportspersons from the state who have excelled at Northeast, national, and international levels.

In his speech during the event, S Keoshu Yimkhiung, Advisor for Youth Resources and Sports, revealed that the state government is in the process of crafting a new sports policy, aligning with the 'Khelo Bharat Niti 2025'.

This policy aims to bolster the state's sports ecosystem and align with the interests of athletes.

Yimkhiung extended heartfelt greetings on behalf of the government and applauded the awardees, noting that the day commemorates the birth anniversary of Major Dhyan Chand, the legendary hockey player whose life continues to inspire generations of athletes.

He further mentioned that sports infrastructure is being developed across all 17 districts of the state.

"Most districts are now equipped with modern stadiums, futsal courts, and other facilities, with additional projects in progress for the remaining districts," he stated.

Yimkhiung also encouraged the police to create job opportunities for promising athletes.

Rupin Sharma, Nagaland's Director General of Police, highlighted both the passion and challenges faced by athletes in the state.

He emphasized that while sports help build discipline, resilience, and character, athletes often face short-lived careers and a lack of private sponsorships in Nagaland due to economic constraints and geographic isolation. He announced that Nagaland Police would soon begin recruitment, favoring qualified sportspersons, and recommended integrating athletes as referees, coaches, and trainers within the system.

Stressing the importance of collaboration, Sharma called for stronger partnerships between government departments and private stakeholders, including through CSR initiatives, to foster a sustainable sporting ecosystem.
