Glenn Maxwell Out of New Zealand T20s Due to Wrist Fracture

Glenn Maxwell is out of the T20 series against New Zealand due to a wrist injury. Josh Philippe joins the team as a replacement. Australia is also missing players like Josh Inglis and Cameron Green. These changes and injuries present a challenging scenario for the team.

Glenn Maxwell Out of New Zealand T20s Due to Wrist Fracture

Melbourne, Sep 30 (PTI) Australia's premier all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has been ruled out of the upcoming three-match T20 series against New Zealand due to a fractured wrist. The injury occurred when he was hit by a straight drive from Mitchell Owen while bowling in the nets at Mount Maunganui.

In Maxwell's absence, Sydney Sixers and New South Wales wicketkeeper-batter Josh Philippe has been called up to join the squad for the series, which kicks off on Wednesday at Mount Maunganui's Bay Oval.

This development adds to Australia's challenges, as Josh Inglis is also sidelined due to a calf injury. Consequently, Alex Carey has been selected to step in.

The 36-year-old Maxwell, who recently played a pivotal role with an unbeaten half-century in Australia's T20 series victory over South Africa last month, sustained the injury on his right wrist while bowling.

Maxwell is set to return to Australia to consult a specialist in the coming days.

Philippe, known for his impressive performances in the Big Bash League, has also shown his prowess during the recent Australia 'A' tour of India.

"I saw it out of the corner of my eye. I saw (Owen) smoked it and then the aftermath - it hit Maxi on the wrist. It didn't sound good," remarked all-rounder Matthew Short, who was practicing in the adjacent net, according to cricket.com.au.

"(Owen) is not the guy you want to be bowling to in T20 training, that's for sure.

Maxi's been through serious injuries before – he's a bit disappointed, but it's like any other injury. I'm sure he'll get through it," he added.

Australia is also without Cameron Green, who is focusing on preparations for the forthcoming Ashes and is currently playing in the Sheffield Shield.

Moreover, star pacer Pat Cummins is absent due to a back issue, while Nathan Ellis has opted out of the New Zealand series as he awaits the birth of his first child.
