Maxwell Tunes Spin Skills for T20 World Cup 2026 in Subcontinent

Cairns, Australia, Aug 14 (PTI): As preparations intensify for next year's T20 World Cup in the Indian subcontinent, Australia's dynamic all-rounder Glenn Maxwell is honing his spin-bowling abilities to enhance his effectiveness during powerplay overs on spinner-friendly tracks. With the tournament set for 2026 in India and Sri Lanka, a fully fit Maxwell could bolster the Australian squad's ambitions to reclaim the trophy they last clinched in 2021.

The all-rounder has been a notable figure in the Indian Premier League, delivering standout performances for teams like Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Punjab Kings, showcasing his prowess as a destructive batsman and decisive bowler. Despite his capabilities, Maxwell has bowled only five powerplay overs in T20 internationals between the 2022 World Cup and the current home series against South Africa.

However, the 36-year-old believes the subcontinent's conditions could present an opportunity for him in the powerplay. "In the subcontinent, as a spinner, you might capitalize on the wicket early on," Maxwell mentioned in an interview with cricket.com.au. "The new ball, with its hard seam, can grip well on dry surfaces, which is something we're considering moving forward."

In a recent T20I match against South Africa in Darwin, Maxwell took two crucial wickets, including that of captain Aiden Markram, during the fifth powerplay over. "I love getting wickets. It's always surprising when I dismiss someone. I'm tasked with performing in the powerplay, and I strive to execute that role effectively," he commented.

Apart from his bowling, Maxwell remains versatile in the batting lineup, seamlessly adjusting to the team’s needs. "I've been shuffled around the order quite a bit. Filling gaps is part of my role right now. During the West Indies series, I moved up to counter Akeal Hosein, while in the South Africa series, I've gone lower to manage the innings' back end. My goal is to play whatever role is required and stay as adaptable as possible," he concluded.
