Mason Howell triumphs U.S. Amateur with decisive win at Olympic Club

San Francisco, Aug 18 (AP) — At The Olympic Club, Georgia's young golfing prodigy Mason Howell delivered an exceptional performance, capturing the U.S. Amateur title. This victory comes after his debut appearance at the U.S. Open just two months prior. Howell, who recently celebrated his 18th birthday in June, took command early against fellow teen Jackson Herrington from Tennessee. He secured a decisive 7 and 6 victory in the 36-hole final, moving ahead of legends like Tiger Woods and becoming the third youngest champion in the history of the tournament. Only Byeong Hun An and Danny Lee were younger when they claimed the title in 2009 and 2008, respectively.

Howell shared his overwhelming emotions, stating, "It's all jumbled together. It's been such a great week. To have my name next to these other names on this trophy is unbelievable. To be next to somebody named Tiger is an unreal feeling." Howell secured his win with a par on the 30th hole, mirroring the most one-sided final since Bryson DeChambeau's victory over Derek Bard in 2015. This triumph guarantees Howell invitations to the Masters, U.S. Open, and British Open in the upcoming year, along with a place in the Walker Cup at Cypress Point in September.

"I felt like I always had it," Howell remarked about his summertime performance. "It's self-belief. I knew it was in me. I just needed to walk with some confidence, and I think that would translate to good golf and staying positive."

The final was historic, marking the first showdown between two teenagers since Matt Fitzpatrick's win over Oliver Goss in 2013. Displaying maturity beyond his years, Howell remained unflappable, landing putts when it mattered while his opponent Herrington faltered.

Howell dominated by clinching 11 holes, winning eight with simple pars, and demonstrated resilience by recovering after each of the four holes he lost. He emerged on the national scene after qualifying with notably low rounds at the U.S. Open in Atlanta, though he missed the cut at Oakmont. Still, the experience proved invaluable at The Olympic Club.

Among a fierce field, Howell was one of 17 players advancing from a grueling 20-man playoff into the match play phase, where he won all six matchups. "Honestly, I have known how good he is for a long time," shared his proud father, Robert Howell. "He's had a phenomenal breakout summer." Howell surged ahead on the front nine, including an eagle at hole No. 7, taking a commanding four-hole lead. With astute putting, he expanded his advantage by the par-5 16th hole.

"Starting strong was key," Howell recounted. "We wanted the lead through nine, and we did. I wanted to maintain pressure without taking unnecessary risks, opting to aim for greens' centers and routine two-putts."

Despite Herrington's birdie finish on the par-5 18th, closing the gap slightly, his three consecutive bogeys post-break sealed his fate. "He played well, and I didn't play great,” Herrington admitted. “I learned a lot about myself.” As Howell gears up for the start of his final high school year, with plans to join the University of Georgia in 2026, he reflects, "Despite everything, I still have to go sit in a classroom for eight hours these coming months. I just need to soak this up and enjoy it with friends and family.” Meanwhile, 19-year-old Herrington looks forward to his sophomore year at Tennessee.

The Olympic Club has now hosted the prestigious U.S. Amateur four times, with previous winners including Charles Coe (1958), Nathaniel Crosby (1981), and Cole Knost (2007). (AP) UNG
