Manpreet Singh's Fitness Transformation Fuels World Cup Ambitions

Manpreet Singh, with over 400 caps, revamps his fitness and diet, aiming for success in the Asia Cup, eyeing a World Cup berth.

Manpreet Singh's Fitness Transformation Fuels World Cup Ambitions

New Delhi, Aug 7 (PTI): Manpreet Singh, a distinguished figure in Indian hockey, boasting two Olympic medals and over 400 international caps, continues to thrive by modifying his lifestyle and dietary habits.

The former Indian captain, instrumental in securing a historic bronze at the Tokyo Olympics, recognized the need for heightened fitness levels after last year’s Paris Games. He realized continuing at the pinnacle of the swiftly evolving hockey landscape would require significant transformation in maintaining his physical condition.

In an interview with PTI Bhasha, the 32-year-old athlete, poised for the upcoming Asia Cup—a World Cup qualifier in Bihar this month—emphasized the necessity of matching the pace and fitness of the younger team members despite his experience.

Having earned 402 international caps, just behind Dilip Tirkey’s record of 412, Manpreet has implemented a substantial shift in his dietary and training routines over the past year.

With a newfound focus on high-protein, low-carb meals and avoiding sweets and junk food, indulging only minimally once a week, the veteran player added specialized speed and core strength workouts to his regimen. This disciplined approach led to a substantial weight loss of seven kilos, enhancing his on-field speed and performance in fitness assessments.

His immediate target remains the Asian Games 2026, avoiding long-term Olympic commitments while reaffirming his dedication to maintaining fitness akin to his idol, Cristiano Ronaldo.

He believes the current Indian squad matches heavyweights like Australia, Netherlands, and Germany in fitness, intensity, and skills, though execution remains a focal point for improvement.

Discussing his approach to managing workload over a lengthy career, Manpreet praised the rotation and opportunities given to young talent in the India A team, ensuring balanced participation. He added that every match played for the nation is a source of pride, managed with appropriate post-tournament recovery.

Manpreet is confident about securing a World Cup berth via the Asia Cup in Rajgir, Bihar, from August 29. Recalling their Tokyo triumph securing an Olympic medal after 41 years, he sees potential for improved World Cup performance, prioritizing capitalizing on knockout stage opportunities.

While acknowledging the challenge posed by various teams aiming for World Cup qualification, Manpreet stresses focusing on India's strengths.

Reflecting on the European leg of the FIH Pro League, despite score lines indicating six consecutive hard-fought losses, he highlighted ongoing defensive adjustments to prevent pressure-induced errors.

The forthcoming four-match Australia tour, starting August 15, offers a fertile ground for strategy testing and evaluating young players against a formidable World Cup-qualified opponent.
