Danish Malewar 198*, Patidar Shines as Central Zone Dominates

Danish Malewar's unbeaten 198 and Rajat Patidar's quick-fire 125 helped Central Zone reach 432/2 before rain halted play against North East Zone in the Duleep Trophy quarter-final. Malewar, on the brink of a double century, and Patidar's explosive innings highlighted the day.

Danish Malewar 198*, Patidar Shines as Central Zone Dominates

BENGALURU, Aug 28 (PTI) - Vidarbha's Ranji Trophy standout Danish Malewar and seasoned cricketer Rajat Patidar dismantled a lackluster North East Zone bowling lineup with their respective centuries, as Central Zone stormed to a commanding 432 for 2 in just 77 overs before rain interrupted play on the opening day of the Duleep Trophy quarter-final on Thursday.

The young 21-year-old Malewar, fresh from his heroic hundred in the Ranji Trophy final last season, was unbeaten on a towering career-best 198 when the weather intervened. Meanwhile, RCB's IPL-winning captain Rajat Patidar was the aggressive force in the partnership, racing to 125 off just 96 balls. The duo combined to plunder a total of 56 boundaries between them, illustrating their dominance.

Malewar was nearing his maiden first-class double century, having hammered 35 fours and a six, while Patidar's innings was peppered with 21 fours and three towering sixes. Their remarkable partnership unfolded after opener Aryan Juyal (60 not out) was forced to retire hurt following a blow to the abdominal region. Unfazed, Malewar and Patidar accelerated, amassing a swift 199 runs for the second wicket in just over 28 overs.

On the verge of crossing the 1,000 run mark in his 10th first-class game, Malewar was in sublime touch. His third first-class century was studded with 20 boundaries, with the milestone boundary marking his entry into triple figures.

Patidar, creeping into the 90s, unleashed a series of reverse sweeps against pass bowler Rongsen Jonathan (0/130 in 15 overs) before striking a captivating cover drive to achieve his 14th first-class century. However, his aggressive approach eventually led to his dismissal, caught by Ankur Malik while attempting to sweep off pacer Pheiroijam Jotin.

Following Patidar's departure, Malewar was joined by fellow Ranji teammate Yash Rathod. They compiled a swift 85-run unbroken stand for the third wicket, with Rathod contributing an unbeaten 32 as rain curtailed play.

Brief Scores: Central Zone 432/2 in 77 overs (Danish Malewar 198 not out, Rajat Patidar 125) vs North East Zone.
