Karun Nair Rejoins Indian Cricket Team

Jaipur, May 24 (PTI) Back in the Indian cricket team after an eight-year hiatus, batter Karun Nair expressed his elation, stating he had been "awaiting this call" after an outstanding 2024-25 domestic season.

Nair, who last featured in international cricket in 2017, was axed shortly after making history as India's second Test triple centurion. Now, his return is marked by his vibrant performances on the domestic circuit.

"I'm grateful to be back; it's a mix of happiness, pride, and gratitude," Nair said. "I discovered my selection much like everyone else. I've been eagerly waiting for this call and received a flood of congratulatory messages from my close circle."

In an impressive Ranji Trophy campaign, Nair amassed 863 runs in nine matches, including four centuries. His prolific run continued in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, where he scored 779 runs in eight innings, featuring five centuries. These stellar performances have paved the way for his comeback to the Indian side.

"I am really happy and proud of my achievements. Over the past 12-16 months, my batting has been in great form. It’s essential to keep my processes consistent and rely on what works for me," Nair added. His batting exploits were pivotal in Vidarbha's triumph in the Ranji Trophy during the 2024-25 season.

Reflecting on Delhi Capitals' six-wicket victory over Punjab Kings in the IPL, which concluded their season positively though they missed the play-offs, Nair shared, "It feels amazing. We truly deserve this. Although we haven't played our best throughout, tonight's win shows that we're a strong team that simply had some off days."

Though young talent Sameer Rizvi secured the Man-of-the-Match award with his debut IPL half-century, Nair's crucial 44 off 27 balls helped stabilize the innings during the middle overs for DC.

"I’ve been hitting the ball well, entering the tournament with plenty of runs behind me. My confidence was high. Initially, I was attempting too many shots too soon, but the coaches advised me to take my time before accelerating," Nair explained.
