John Campbell's Sensational Maiden Test Century in India

New Delhi, Oct 13 (PTI) West Indies opener John Campbell was left almost speechless after achieving his maiden Test century on Monday. The key to his successful innings, he noted, was his sensible approach to shot selection. Following on, Campbell scored a remarkable 155 off 199 balls, alongside teammate Shai Hope who contributed 103 off 214 deliveries. The duo forged a crucial 177-run partnership for the third wicket, showcasing a resilient West Indies side that extended the match to its fifth day. "I can't really put it into words right now. Maybe tomorrow I'll be able to describe it. We always spoke about it being a good batting track. As a batsman, once you get a start here, it becomes easier. I think I still went for my shots, it was just about being more selective," Campbell said, reflecting on his milestone achievement. "My shot selection was a lot clearer in this innings. I've always enjoyed playing the sweep. Thankfully, it worked well for me." Displaying grit and determination, the visitors amassed 390 runs in their second innings, setting India a target of 121. By stumps, India were 58 runs away from securing a 2-0 clean sweep. Campbell etched his name in history as the first West Indies opener in 23 years to score a Test century on Indian soil since Wavell Hinds made a ton at Eden Gardens in 2002. He reached this landmark in style, dispatching Ravindra Jadeja for six with an exquisite shot over wide long-on. "Before the ball, I saw him (Jadeja) putting mid-on a little bit closer, so I thought, if it's close enough for me, I'm going for it. I am just thankful I could come back in the second innings and make a big contribution for the team," he concluded.
