Japan's Exit Leaves Void at U-20 World Cup in Chile

Japanese fans electrified Chile's Under-20 World Cup with vibrant support. Despite their team's narrow 1-0 defeat to France, fans made a cultural impact, leaving a clean stadium and heartfelt connections.

Japan's Exit Leaves Void at U-20 World Cup in Chile

Santiago (Chile), Oct 10 (AP) — The dynamic atmosphere in Chile has quieted down with Japan's exit from the men's Under-20 World Cup. Japanese fans, with their enthusiastic display of drums, banners, flags, and signs, brought a unique energy that captivated local spectators as Japan advanced to the round of 16 following an impeccable group-stage performance. However, their journey concluded on Wednesday with a narrow 1-0 defeat to France. Toshi Yoshizawa, a 43-year-old supporter who recently relocated to Mexico to establish a ramen restaurant, shared with The Associated Press, “This World Cup and my national team made it easy for me to cross the ocean.” Yoshizawa was part of a spirited group of fans who made a memorable impact in Chile, whether they were cheering in Santiago or Valparaíso. The group included individuals who traveled solo, businessmen residing in Chile, and supporters like Yoshizawa who formed lasting connections during the Asian qualifying rounds in China last February. During Wednesday's game at Santiago's National Stadium, the fans' energy and dedication forged a connection with the local audience, something keenly felt by the players. In a gesture of gratitude, the players left a message in their locker room reading, “Thank you very much, Chile! We are very proud of your culture!” As the players departed the stadium by bus, many fans remained momentarily to tidy up the stands, mindful of leaving the area spotless after their exuberant celebration. Yoshizawa explained, “It's one of our traditions: we grew up with the teaching that we should leave a place cleaner than when we arrived.” (AP) AM AM AM
