Alexander Isak Threatens Exit from Newcastle Amidst Commitment Disputes

Alexander Isak, unhappy with Newcastle's broken promises, threatens to leave following interest from Liverpool. While the club denies any exit agreements, manager Eddie Howe remains optimistic about Isak's future involvement. Interest in Yoane Wissa grows.

Alexander Isak Threatens Exit from Newcastle Amidst Commitment Disputes

Newcastle, Aug 20 (AP) - Alexander Isak has publicly expressed his dissatisfaction with Newcastle, alleging that the club has failed to honor commitments, stating, “the relationship can't continue.” This comes after a bid for the Swedish striker from Liverpool during the offseason, which coincided with his decision to train separately from the rest of the Newcastle squad as he explored other opportunities.

Isak was absent from Newcastle's Premier League opener against Aston Villa on Saturday, which ended in a goalless draw.

The 25-year-old, who netted 27 goals in 42 appearances for the Magpies last season, was named in the PFA Premier League Team of the Season. He used a social media post to express gratitude and address his situation at Newcastle for the first time.

“I've kept quiet for a long time while others have spoken,” Isak posted. “That silence has allowed people to push their own version of events, even though they know it doesn't reflect what was really said and agreed behind closed doors.

“The reality is that promises were made and the club has known my position for a long time. To act now as if these issues are only emerging is misleading. When promises are broken and trust is lost, the relationship can't continue,” Isak wrote, concluding that “change is in the best interests of everyone, not just myself.”

Newcastle responded by stating, “We are clear in response that Alex remains under contract and that no commitment has ever been made by a club official that Alex can leave Newcastle United this summer.”

The club emphasized their desire to retain top talent while acknowledging players’ wishes, explaining that any decisions must consider the best interests of Newcastle United, the team, and its supporters. They clarified that the conditions for a sale this summer have not been met.

Isak, who joined Newcastle in 2022 from Real Sociedad, has developed into one of the world's most sought-after strikers.

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe noted last week that reintegrating Isak into the squad remains possible despite current tensions. Howe admitted the offseason had been challenging without his star striker but commended the team for coming together during the latter stages of preseason. The club underscored its family ethos, stating, “Alex remains part of our family and will be welcomed back when he is ready to rejoin his teammates.”

Isak finished second in the Premier League scoring charts last season with 23 goals, closely following Liverpool's Mohamed Salah.

In a potential move, Newcastle has shown interest in Brentford's Yoane Wissa, who was also absent from the opening round of games. (AP) AM AM AM
