Women's IPL likely to start from 2023, Women's T20 Challenge to return during IPL 2022

The BCCI plans to launch the much-awaited women's IPL in 2023, board president Sourav Ganguly said on Friday.

In the inaugural edition, the Indian board intends to have five or six teams. The existing ten men's IPL franchises will have first refusal to purchase the women's IPL teams.

According to media reports, four men's IPL franchises are said to be interested in hearing what the BCCI has to offer if they wish to invest in the Women's IPL.

While talking to reporters after IPL governing council meeting, Ganguly said, " The full-fledged women's IPL has to be approved by the AGM. We plan to start it by next year hopefully."

Meanwhile, after a year gap, the Women's T20 challenge is set to return this year. IPL governing council chairman Brijesh Patel said that the four women's T20 matches will be played around IPL 2022 playoffs.

Notably, women's T20 games were not held during the previous edition after the second leg of IPL 2021 was staged in UAE.
