IPL 2022 mega auction: the 'silent tiebreaker bid' rule explained

Each IPL franchise is given a total purse balance of Rs. 90 crore in the auction to buy players. But what will happen if teams exhaust their entire purse in the pursuit of a player?

Though such a situation has never arrived in the auction the IPL management has a specific rule for this purpose which is called 'Silent Tiebreaker'. This rule will come into the picture in a scenario where one team's 'final bid' for a player has been matched by another franchise but they don't have any money left in the purse. In such a case, both franchises will need to submit a written bid stating the amount that they would pay for the player over and above the 'last bid' that they had earlier submitted.

If the silent bids also turn out to be equal, the same process would be repeated until the tie is broken. But, the additional money that the franchises have bid, will not go to the player but the IPL in general.
