IPL 2022, KKR VS MI: Kolkata’s playoff hopes remain alive, beat MI by 52 runs

Kolkata’s playoff hopes remain alive as they thrashed Mumbai Indians by 52 runs in IPL 2022 at the DY Patil Stadium on Monday. Bumrah’s sensational show with the ball went down the drain as Mumbai suffered their 9th defeat of the 2022 IPL season.

A brilliant bowling performance by Kolkata Knight Riders never allowed Mumbai to be in control while chasing a below par 166-run target. Kolkata began their attack early as they removed Rohit Sharma in the first over itself. Thereafter Ishan Kishan held the fort with a sluggish 51, but that didn’t help the cause as wickets kept falling in quick succession from the other end. Pat Cummins removed Ishan Kishan to leave Mumbai struggling at 102/5. Post that, Mumbai could only add 13 more runs. The Cummins-Russell duo picked 6 wickets together and forced Mumbai Indians to wrap their innings at 113 within 18 overs.

Earlier, after deciding to bowl first, a scintillating show by Mumbai’s Jasprit Bumrah helped them restrict the Kolkata Knight Riders to 165/9 in 20 overs. Bumrah in the later overs, wreaked havoc as he picked 5 wickets giving away just 10 runs. However, the Shreyas Iyer-led team had got a great start courtesy of Venkatesh Iyer and Nitish Rana which helped them achieve a respectable total. Both scored 43 in 24 balls each. In the last 5 overs, KKR could only manage to score 25 runs and lost 4 of their wickets.
