India's AFC Hopes Hinge on Crucial Singapore Clash

India's AFC Hopes Hinge on Crucial Singapore Clash

Margao (Goa), Oct 13 (PTI) – The Indian football team's dreams of securing a place in the AFC Asian Cup 2027 teeter on the edge as they gear up to host Singapore in a pivotal return-leg match at the Fatorda Stadium this Tuesday. With a victory being the only way to keep their fragile hopes alive, head coach Khalid Jamil eagerly anticipates the inclusion of Mohun Bagan Super Giant's defender Subhasish Bose and midfielder Lalengmawia 'Apuia' Ralte into the lineup, infusing the Blue Tigers with much-needed vitality ahead of this crucial encounter. The suspension of Sandesh Jhingan sets the stage for Bose and Apuia to make meaningful contributions. Bose is expected to bring leadership and composure to a defense that faltered under pressure during the previous encounter in Singapore, offering essential experience against swift forward threats like Ikhsan Fandi and Shawal Anuar. Meanwhile, Apuia is set to fortify the midfield with his command over possession and ability to dictate the game's rhythm, linking defense with attack seamlessly. India will also count on home advantage to bolster their performance. Jamil’s tactical flexibility stems from these additions, enabling India to maintain a balanced, tenacious, and proactive approach as they aim for an essential win on home turf. Group C’s dynamics have become increasingly delicate following the 1-1 draw in Singapore on October 9. A late equaliser from Rahim Ali rescued a point for a 10-man Indian side after Ikhsan Fandi's goal had put the hosts ahead just before the break. This result has India positioned third in the group, with two points from three matches, trailing both Hong Kong and China, who jointly lead with seven points, and Singapore with five. Bangladesh sits at the bottom with a single point. With progression only available to the group’s top team, India faces an almost negligible margin for error. To remain contenders, India must triumph in each of their remaining matches, with the added hope that Hong Kong, China can only accrue a maximum of four points from their concluding games. Additionally, India needs to overcome the group leaders with a significant goal difference to improve their head-to-head standing. Securing victory against Singapore in the return leg is paramount, as it could position India ahead of them even if they manage to secure wins in their other fixtures. Any slip against Singapore or Hong Kong, coupled with a Bangladesh victory over Hong Kong, may prematurely terminate India's campaign, leaving two matches unimportant. The first leg’s encounter in Singapore highlighted India's persistence. Despite a promising start, the Blue Tigers conceded just before halftime, as Fandi converted a slick move. Challenges amplified when Jhingan received a second yellow card in the 47th minute, reducing India to 10 men for nearly the entire second half. Yet, the team maintained their resolve, with goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu executing crucial saves to keep the score level. An opportune defensive error from Singapore allowed Rahim Ali to net his debut goal for India in the 90th minute, securing an electrifying 1-1 draw and sustaining their qualification prospects.
