India's U17 team seeks victory against Chinese Taipei in AFC Cup qualifiers after drawing with Palestine.

India Targets First Victory in AFC U17 Asia Cup Qualifiers

Ahmedabad, November 25 (PTI) - India is eyeing their first victory in the AFC Under-17 Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2026 Qualifiers as they prepare to face Chinese Taipei on Wednesday. The Blue Colts opened their campaign with a 1-1 draw against Palestine last Saturday. Despite maintaining control for extended periods, India was unable to secure a win.

Shubham Poonia scored with a first-half header to put India in the lead, but a late equalizer from Palestine resulted in the teams splitting the points. Group D is still wide open, with Iran leading as the only team with a win so far. Palestine and Lebanon each have two points, while India and Chinese Taipei both stand at one point.

With only the group winners progressing to the AFC U17 Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2026, the upcoming fixture is crucial for both teams. Head coach Bibiano Fernandes emphasized that the team is well-prepared and focused on the challenge ahead. "These players are still learning. I always tell them to play with confidence and responsibility," he stated.

The coach added, "A draw hasn't changed our ambition. We want the players to take the right risks, express themselves, and remain composed in challenging moments. The key is to grow from each match." India benefits from a three-day rest period, as they were the only team not playing on the second matchday, where Chinese Taipei suffered a 0-5 defeat to Iran, and Palestine and Lebanon played to a 1-1 draw.

"Having a longer gap certainly helps," Bibiano acknowledged. "It allowed us to recover, address minor issues, and prepare with more clarity. The players seem fresh, which lets us demand higher intensity. Yet, selection will still hinge on who fits the plan and performs well in training."

Fernandes further revealed that they've honed in on movement and positioning to provide players with the clarity needed to find solutions on the field.

Chinese Taipei, managed by Wang Po-min, is expected to be eager to rebound after their heavy loss. They previously earned a point in a 0-0 draw against Lebanon, showcasing defensive resilience by not conceding a goal in their initial 135 minutes of qualifying action.
