Deepesh Devendran Shines with Five-Wicket Haul in Youth Test

Brisbane, Sept 30 (PTI): In the first Youth Test match on Tuesday, seamer Deepesh Devendran led India U19 to a strong position by claiming a stunning five-wicket haul, as Australia U19 were bowled out for 243. The 17-year-old from Tamil Nadu delivered an impressive performance with figures of 5/45 in 16.2 overs. He was ably supported by Kishan Kumar, who took 3/48 in 16 overs.

Australia's batting was halted at 91.2 overs, with Steven Hogan emerging as the standout performer. Hogan, batting one-down, exhibited resilience with a top score of 92 runs off 246 balls, standing firm as his teammates failed to capitalize after getting set.

Zed Hollick contributed 38 runs off 94 balls, making him the second-highest scorer in an Australian innings that lacked substantial partnerships. After opting to bat first, Australia faced early setbacks, losing two wickets for a mere 30 runs. Deepesh and Kishan Kumar struck early at the Ian Healy Oval.

Off-spinner Anmoljeet Singh removed Australian skipper Will Malajczuk for 21 runs, leaving the hosts at 78 for three by the end of the first session. Subsequent breakthroughs by Khilan Patel and Deepesh saw Hollick and wicketkeeper Simon Budge being dismissed, putting Australia at 167 for five.

The Indian bowlers maintained a disciplined line and length throughout, which prevented any significant partnerships from forming for the home side.

Earlier, the two teams faced each other in a three-match Youth ODI series, where the Ayush Mhatre-led India claimed a 3-0 sweep. India secured their victories with margins of 57, 51, and 167 runs to clinch the series.

The second and final Youth Test is scheduled to take place from October 7-10 at the Great Barrier Reef Arena in Mackay.
