Indian Hockey Team Prepares for Australia Series as Asia Cup Looms

Bengaluru, Aug 8 (PTI): Indian hockey captain Harmanpreet Singh has emphasized that the upcoming series against Australia on their home ground will be crucial for identifying improvement areas for the Indian men's hockey team. This series, happening just ahead of the Asia Cup, which also plays the role of a World Cup qualifier, is seen as an essential part of India’s preparations. Harmanpreet highlighted the challenges of competing against Australia in their familiar conditions as an opportunity to refine skills and teamwork. "Facing Australia in their home conditions is always a formidable challenge, and it is exactly what we need at this stage," expressed Harmanpreet before the team left for Australia early this morning. The series includes four critical matches scheduled from August 15 to 21 at the Perth Hockey Stadium.

"We are considering this series a crucial segment of our build-up for the Asia Cup. Our focus remains on improving as a cohesive unit, testing our strengths against robust opposition, and gaining the momentum required for the tourney in Rajgir," he added. "These matches will allow us to identify areas needing refinement before the Asia Cup, and we’re excited for the chance to engage in high-intensity hockey with a top-tier team like Australia." The tour promises valuable match exposure against one of the highest-ranked international teams, offering the coaching staff an opportunity to perfect team combinations and evaluate each player’s form ahead of the continental tournament.

The games are lined up for August 15, 16, 19, and 21.

The squad, a mix of seasoned players and emerging talents, will be closely scrutinized as the final team for the Asia Cup is decided. The Asia Cup starts on August 29 in Rajgir, with the tournament winner securing a direct World Cup berth.
