India Takes Early Advantage on Day 1 against West Indies

Ahmedabad, Oct 2 (PTI) - The opening day of the first Test between India and West Indies unfolded with India gaining the upper hand with a solid performance both with the ball and the bat. The Test match, taking place in Ahmedabad, saw the West Indies being bowled out for a total of 162 in their first innings.

West Indies started their innings with John Campbell making 8 runs before being caught by Dhruv Jurel off a delivery from Jasprit Bumrah. Tagenarine Chanderpaul was dismissed for a duck, caught by Jurel off Mohammed Siraj’s bowling. Alick Athanaze added 12 runs before Rahul took the catch, once again from a ball by Siraj. Brandon King also fell prey to Siraj, getting bowled for 13 runs. Roston Chase was another victim for Jurel, this time from Siraj's bowling, managing 24 runs for his side. Shai Hope contributed 26 runs but was bowled by Kuldeep Yadav.

Jomel Warrican managed to put together 8 runs, caught by Jurel off Yadav's delivery, while Johann Layne was bowled by Bumrah after scoring a single run. Jayden Seales remained unbeaten with 6 runs. Extras contributed significantly to the West Indies' total, adding 21 runs through byes, leg byes, wides, and no balls. The West Indies innings folded in 44.1 overs, posting a total of 162.

In response, India had a strong start in their first innings. Opener Yashasvi Jaiswal made 36 runs before being caught by Hope off Jayden Seales' bowling. KL Rahul displayed fine form and is currently batting on 53 runs. Sai Sudharsan was leg before wicket to Roston Chase's delivery, departing for 7 runs. Currently accompanying Rahul at the crease is Shubman Gill, who is batting on 18. India closed the day's play with a score of 121 for 2 in 38 overs, trailing by only 41 runs.

The bowling highlights for India included a commendable performance by Mohammed Siraj, who took 4 wickets for 40 runs. Jasprit Bumrah also impressed with a 3-wicket haul for 42 runs, while Kuldeep Yadav added another 2 wickets to the tally. For the West Indies, Jayden Seales claimed a wicket for 21 runs, and Roston Chase took the only other wicket.

As the day ended, India positioned themselves strongly heading into day two, with a good chance to extend their lead further.
