Adidas is the official kit sponsor for the Indian cricket team, having secured a five-year agreement with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in 2023. As part of this deal, Adidas is to exclusively design and supply all team kits and merchandise. By wearing a garment from Nike—a direct competitor—Gill potentially breached the terms of this sponsorship contract.

The situation has sparked a reaction on social media, where many fans have speculated about possible legal ramifications. When announcing their sponsorship, the BCCI stated that Adidas would have exclusive rights for manufacturing kits across all formats for the Men's, Women's, and U-19 teams until March 2028.
