India Bids for 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad

New Delhi, Aug 13 (PTI) — The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has officially endorsed India’s bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, following a vote during a Special General Meeting (SGM) in New Delhi. India intends to offer an "inclusive" version of the Games, incorporating all sports that historically bring medals to the country.

Ahmedabad has been proposed as the host city, and India has already submitted an Expression of Interest. However, a final bid submission is required before the August 31 deadline. The unanimous support was confirmed by IOA Joint Secretary Kalyan Chaubey, who stated, "We will now move ahead full steam with our preparations."

Canada’s withdrawal from the bidding race has improved India’s prospects of hosting the 2030 event. The upcoming Games will feature all the sports in which India has excelled, said Executive Council member Rohit Rajpal. This contrasts with the trimmed schedule of the 2026 edition in Glasgow, where key sports like hockey, badminton, wrestling, and shooting were omitted due to cost considerations.

Rajpal elaborated on the categorization of sports: those that are core Commonwealth Games disciplines, those chosen by the host nation, and additional sports. The 2030 Games will also include traditional and indigenous sports. A team from Commonwealth Sport recently visited Ahmedabad to assess the venues and hold meetings with Gujarat government officials, with a larger delegation expected soon.

The General Assembly of Commonwealth Sport will finalize the host country decision in the last week of November in Glasgow. India is aiming to include sports where it has historically done well, such as shooting, archery, and wrestling, while also encompassing traditional sports like kabaddi and kho kho, according to Chaubey.
