Virat Kohli: Indian star says he's chasing betterment, not excellence | ICC Cricket World Cup

Virat Kohli, the talismanic Indian batsman, has been in exceptional form in the ongoing World Cup, and he attributes his success to a philosophy of constant improvement rather than chasing an elusive ideal of excellence.

Currently, Virat Kohli holds the distinction of being India's highest run-scorer in the tournament, amassing an impressive 354 runs in five matches, with an outstanding average of 118.00. His exceptional performance includes a century and three half-centuries, cementing his reputation as one of the world's finest batters.

Kohli shared his perspective with Star Sports, stating, "I have always worked on how I can better myself every day, every practice session, every year and every season. So, that is what has helped me play for this long and perform."

The Indian skipper emphasized that striving for continuous improvement has been the cornerstone of his success. He went on to explain, "I don't think it is possible to perform consistently without having that mindset because if performance is your goal, then one can get satisfied after a while and stop working on their game."

Virat Kohli's approach is grounded in the pursuit of "betterment" rather than aiming for an undefined concept of "excellence." He explained, "It has always been my motto to chase betterment and not excellence because I honestly don't know what the definition of excellence is. There is no limit to it, nor there is a set standard that when you reach here you have achieved excellence."

Kohli's drive to continuously enhance his skills and approach has yielded impressive results, with performance becoming a natural byproduct of his relentless commitment to improvement. Currently, he stands as the second-highest run-scorer in the World Cup 2023, trailing Quinton de Kock of South Africa by just 53 runs.

Kohli's century in a match against Bangladesh was a testament to his prowess, and he now finds himself within two centuries of breaking Sachin Tendulkar's record for the most centuries in ODI cricket. His relentless pursuit of betterment has made him a cricketing icon and a force to be reckoned with in international cricket.
