Pat Cummins calls for bigger Cricket World Cup Squads after Maxwell, Marsh face uncertainty | ENG vs AUS

Pat Cummins calls for bigger Cricket World Cup Squads after Maxwell, Marsh face uncertainty | ENG vs AUS

Australia's ICC Cricket World Cup squad faces the absence of key players, Glenn Maxwell and Mitchell Marsh, with the team's captain, Pat Cummins, expressing the need for bigger squads due to the tournament's duration. Maxwell sustained a freak injury while playing golf, while Marsh returned home for personal reasons, leaving uncertainty around their return.

Cummins emphasized the World Cup's extensive timeline, suggesting that teams should have more than 15 players available in their squads. This would ensure that unforeseen situations, such as injuries or personal matters, don't significantly impact the team's performance.

"Yeah, to be honest. It's a two-month tournament. You wouldn't want to be in a position like New Zealand. They have had some injuries and, luckily, they've been able to hold Kane (Williamson) in the squad. But if suddenly you had to rule him out, I think that wouldn't be good for cricket or World Cup.

"It's not like you can poach players from other countries, so I always think of as many players as you need, you should be able to pick from," Cummins said during his pre-match press conference.

Regarding the absence of Maxwell and Marsh, Cummins acknowledged the suboptimal situation during a crucial phase when Australia is striving for a spot in the semifinals. He explained that they had prepared for such circumstances, as the nature of a two-month tournament requires flexibility.

Cummins expressed hope that Maxwell would return to the field sooner than Marsh, as he is expected to miss just one game. He stated that Maxwell was making progress and taking it day by day, while Marsh would return as soon as possible. Cummins recognized the importance of providing Marsh with the time and space he needs.

Australia are still three matches away from securing a spot in the semifinals, and Cummins anticipates smoother progress as the team's squad becomes more complete. Despite the challenges, he remains optimistic about their campaign.

Additionally, Cummins shared his surprise at the defending champions, England, who have struggled in the tournament. Currently, England is at the bottom of the table with only two points from six matches. Cummins expressed his astonishment at England's performance and noted that, in cricket tournaments, even strong teams can face initial difficulties before regaining momentum.

On the contrary, New Zealand cricketer Glenn Philips disagreed with the notion of larger squads, stating that a squad of 15 was perfect. He explained that teams can quickly fly in replacements if necessary, and the current format with 15 players is sufficient. Philips emphasized that it allows teams to cover their bases and make replacements if injuries or concerns arise, making the format ideal as it is.
