It is understood that Chahar is currently at home as a close family member has not been keeping well and he urgently needed a break from the sport.
Chahar, in fact, missed the fifth and final T20I against Australia in Bengaluru, as he had to rush back home after being intimated about the family member's illness.
"Deepak hasn't yet joined the team in Durban as a close family member needed urgent hospitalisation. He had taken permission for a break as he needed to attend to his family member.
"He may or may not join the squad depending on his family member's health in coming days," a senior BCCI official told PTI on condition of anonymity.
The BCCI top brass understands that Chahar might not be in the best frame of mind till the family member fully recovers and hence if he doesn't wish to join the team now, he would be excused.
The 31-year-old Rajasthan veteran boasts best figures of 6/7 in a T20 International and his prolonged absence due to injury did affect the T20 squad's balance in the past two years.
With his incisive swing bowling in Powerplay overs, Chahar is an integral part of the T20I squad and the team management would like him to get as much game time as possible.
However, there remains a possibility that Chahar, who is also part of the ODI squad, will join the team during the second phase of the white ball-leg of the ongoing tour to SA.
However, the other two members of the T20I squad, Shubman Gill and vice-captain Ravindra Jadeja, who were holidaying abroad after the World Cup final have directly linked up with the squad in Durban and attended the practice sessions.&nbsp;

Ashwini, 34, and 20-year-old Tanisha started playing together only in January this year and were part of India's Asian Games squad which competed in Hangzhou, China in September-October.
One of India's finest doubles exponents, Ashwini has enjoyed a lot of success with Jwala Gutta, winning the 2011 World Championships bronze and the gold and silver medals at the 2010 and 2014 Commonwealth Games respectively.
Ashwini and Jwala had also participated in the 2012 and 2016 Olympics in London and Rio de Janeiro but couldn't cross the group stage on both occasions.
After the 2016 Games, the duo parted ways and Ashwini forged an alliance with N Sikki Reddy. The pair won the 2018 CWG bronze medal, while Ashwini was also instrumental in guiding India to a first-ever mixed team gold in Gold Coast.
Once Ashwini and Sikki parted ways last year, the former started partnering Tanisha, who was born in Dubai.
In fact, Tanisha represented Bahrain and won her first major BWF title at the 2016 Bahrain International Challenge. She moved to India in 2018 and started playing in the domestic circuit, representing Goa.
Three years later, Tanisha made it to the Indian team for the Uber Cup and Sudirman Cup.
Initially, she found success in mixed doubles with Ishaan Bhatnagar, rising to a career-high of world number 18 but an injury to her partner left her stranded as she decided to focus on women's doubles.
After struggling to find a long-term partner, Tanisha finally joined hands with Ashwini and the rest is history.

&ldquo;The Pakistan Cricket Board is still trying to get a visa for Dr Saleem and as soon as it comes he will join the side in Australia in time for the first Test in Perth,&rdquo; a reliable source in the PCB said.
He said similarly former Test batsman, Shoaib Muhammad, who was named manager of the Pakistan junior side taking part in the Asia Cup in UAE, has also been unable to leave with the squad.
"Shoaib had some expired passport issues which the board is sorting out and hopefully he will also soon reach UAE to take charge,&rdquo; the source said.
Ironically even the off-spinner, Sajid Khan, who is set to replace Abrar Ahmed in the Pakistan squad in Australia has also had his departure delayed due to visa issues.
The source admitted before naming the officials in any touring squad, the board should make it certain they will leave with their teams on schedule.&nbsp;

Pakistan Test batter Asad Shafiq has announced his retirement from all forms of cricket after experiencing a dip in his passion for the game.
The 37-year-old made the announcement on Sunday.
&ldquo;I am not feeling the same excitement and passion playing cricket and neither do I have the same fitness levels required for international cricket. Which is why I have decided to say goodbye to all cricket,&rdquo; he told a press conference after leading Karachi Whites to the National T20 Championship title.
Asad also confirmed he was about to sign a contract with the Pakistan Cricket Board to be a paid national selector.
&ldquo;I have got the contract from the board and I am looking at it and hopefully it will be processed soon.&rdquo; He said working as a national selector was an exciting challenge for him and he would look to remain involved in the game.
Asad formed the backbone of the Pakistan Test batting line-up from 2010 to 2020 scoring 4660 runs in 77 games at a healthy average of 38.19 including 12 hundreds and 27 fifties.
Asad along with Azhar Ali, Younis Khan and Misbah ul Haq formed the core of Pakistan&rsquo;s Test batting.
After the spot-fixing scandal of 2010 in England, Asad was seen as the perfect image of Pakistan cricket, clean and non controversial and throughout his career he preferred to keep away from the media and limelight.
Asad also said he had never been pressured to take any decisions in his international cricket and he always did what he felt was best.
&ldquo;After being dropped in 2020 I kept on playing domestic cricket for three years yes in the hope of getting another crack at the Pakistan team. But before the start of this season I had decided this would be my last season because I felt that closing in on 38 years of age this was time to retire instead of people telling me to step down.&rdquo; Asad also said he was proud to have been part of the Pakistan team under Misbah ul Haq which helped clean the image of Pakistan cricket.
&ldquo;After the spot-fixing scandal in 2010 it was a very difficult time for Pakistan cricket and I am happy I was part of that process where we won back the confidence of the people in. Our team.
Asad, who also played 60 ODIs and 10 T20 Internationals, indirectly also admitted that perhaps in Pakistan cricket there was a tendency to select players on likes and dislikes.
Questioned whether he felt that players from Karachi were not given the same opportunities as those from other provinces, Asad interestingly didn&rsquo;t directly refuse this suggestion.

3 top West Indies cricketers, Nicholas Pooran, Jason Holder and Kyle Mayers declined central contracts, revealed the Windies Cricket Board on Sunday.

The development came just 6 months before the T20 World Cup, which the West Indies and the USA will co-hoast in June.

However, the board stated that the 3 players will be available for all T20I matches for the side. The development came just 6 months before the T20 World Cup, which the West Indies and the USA will co-hoast in June.&nbsp;
&ldquo;With a busy year of cricket ahead, in all three formats, we have held several detailed discussions with the two Head Coaches on the brand of cricket they want to play. We are very clear in the direction we want to go. The players who have been offered contracts are among those who we expect to feature, as we look to build towards challenging for the top spot when we host and compete in the ICC Men&rsquo;s T20 World Cup 2024 on home soil," said selector Desmond Haynes.
"We also have away Test Series in Australia and England &ndash; these are two major assignments whilst in the 50-over format we look to build a nucleus of players aimed towards the ICC Men&rsquo;s Cricket World Cup 2027,&rdquo; he further added.
Player and board relations in West Indies have been at a low since a couple of years, with many cricketers opting to play league cricket around the world rather international matches.
The West Indies also failed to qualify for the T20 World Cup in in 2022 and also didn't make it to the recently-concluded Cricket World Cup 2023.
