Irfan Pathan on Shubman Gill's Vice-Captaincy Boost for India

Irfan Pathan praises Shubman Gill's vice-captaincy. Gill's approach suits India's aggressive play. Rohit Sharma focuses on ODIs. Varun Chakravarthy eyes redemption. Effective workload management for bowlers stressed.

Irfan Pathan on Shubman Gill's Vice-Captaincy Boost for India

Mumbai, Sep 2 (PTI) - Former all-rounder Irfan Pathan believes that Shubman Gill's appointment as vice-captain for the T20 format ahead of the Asia Cup will benefit the Indian cricket team in the long term. The 25-year-old Gill, who recently made a successful debut as Test captain, returns to the shortest format with a point to prove through his aggressive batting. Pathan asserted that Gill's vice-captaincy would not exert pressure on current captain Suryakumar Yadav.

"Choosing Shubman Gill as vice-captain was done in mutual agreement with Suryakumar Yadav," Pathan commented during a discussion organized by Sony Sports. He further elaborated that Yadav’s role is to not only lead and perform but also to foster leadership within the team, which he has already begun. "Some might think it pressures him, but this scenario benefits Indian cricket in the long run and endorses Yadav as a respected leader, especially among the cricketing community," Pathan noted.

Gill intends to showcase his aggressive style, Pathan suggested. "Considering the runs he's amassed in the IPL over recent seasons, the Indian team aims to maintain a higher strike rate and aggressive playstyle. Gill will align with this shift seamlessly, bringing his capability and extensive range to the fore," Pathan added.

Rohit's ODI Aspirations
Pathan revealed Rohit Sharma intends to persist with ODIs, having retired from T20Is and Tests. However, both Sharma and even Virat Kohli may face challenges regarding game-time. “The new fitness test isn’t straightforward, but once cleared, it signifies optimal fitness. I had an extensive discussion with him, learning that he is determined to continue competing as long as he remains fit," conveyed Pathan.

“Regardless of age, continued play depends on fitness. The challenge is securing regular game-time. Motivation isn't an issue for those representing India,” Pathan remarked, referencing Sharma, Kohli, and Mohammed Shami's transitions from Tests and T20Is.

Pathan also highlighted Varun Chakravarthy as India’s potential X-factor. "Although all-rounders often bring the X-factor, Chakravarthy’s selection after a disappointing 2021 T20 World Cup in the UAE promises a redemption story. He possesses significant confidence and could indeed be the game-changing element," Pathan stated.

Addressing workload management for critical bowlers like Jasprit Bumrah, Pathan maintained its importance yet emphasized its pertinence before key competitions, not during. "Managing workloads is vital due to players' intense schedules, but doing so during a series may compromise outcomes. You've heard Pat Cummins balances his workload, yet not during the Ashes. Effective workload management requires strategic timing," Pathan concluded.
