Watch: Erik ten Hag praises Harry Maguire amid Manchester United's defensive injury crisis

Erik ten Hag, Manchester United's manager, has expressed his satisfaction with defender Harry Maguire, emphasizing his crucial role in the team, especially during the current defensive injury crisis. This statement comes despite previous speculation about Maguire's potential exit from Old Trafford at the end of last season.

Manchester United's defense has been significantly weakened due to injuries to key players such as Raphael Varane, Lisandro Martinez, and Victor Lindelof. This situation places an even greater importance on Maguire's performance, particularly ahead of their upcoming Premier League match against Bournemouth—a team that handed United a 3-0 defeat at Old Trafford in their last encounter in December.

During a recent press conference, ten Hag highlighted Maguire's value to the team, stating, "We were always happy with Harry Maguire. He wants to play and he's a great leader. He's a very good defender. Very comfortable on the ball. When I count all those abilities, just now when we are in our defending line we have our problems, then he's even more important to lead that line, to make us play from the back. We are very pleased he's there and we need him to get our results and achieve our targets."

Reflecting on the previous loss to Bournemouth, Ten Hag acknowledged that the team was not mentally prepared, which led to their poor performance. "We were mentally not ready for that game. They battled us and we lost the battles. Tomorrow will not differ. That is the way they play. They want to fight with you. It's about making sure you win that fight. You have the confidence, the belief, and you need to support each other to win the battles," he explained.

The manager also addressed the recent challenges the team has faced in maintaining leads during matches. "You have to bring the win over the line. In such moments we should act better. It's not about organisation, but it has to do with individual tactical mistakes. Sometimes technical. It was not out of overplaying. We have to manage the situations better," Ten Hag remarked.

Furthermore, ten Hag discussed his relationship with Manchester United's new management following the departure of John Murtough, the club’s former director of football. He reassured that the transition has been smooth and that he continues to work closely with the new leadership. "I also work with the new ownership very good, closely together. That will not change. It doesn't have an impact on the way I can work here. Conditions were perfect and are still perfect. I'm happy, but we want to set the right conditions to be successful," he stated.
