Ukraine-Russia War: Underfire Russian businessman Roman Abramovich surrenders Chelsea ownership

Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich handed over the "stewardship and care" of the Premier League team to its charitable foundation trustees.

The move came in a response to avoid calls for him to relinquish entire control of Chelsea in the wake of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

After being challenged by many, including politicians, over his ownership, the Russian billionaire is not selling the club but is relinquishing control for the time being.

However, Abramovich, who owned Chelsea since 2003, has not mentioned the Russia-Ukraine war in his statement.

“I have always taken decisions with the Club’s best interest at heart. I remain committed to these values. That is why I am today giving trustees of Chelsea’s charitable Foundation the stewardship and care of Chelsea FC," he said.

Abramovich invested $2 billion which transformed Chelsea into one of the most successful English clubs.

Chelsea have won 19 major titles since Abramovich gained control, including the FIFA Club World Cup and the UEFA Champions League.
