UEFA Champions League: Liverpool & Manchester City win their 1st leg quarterfinal games

Manchester City overcame tough resistance from Diego Simeone's Atletico Madrid as they won the 1st leg at home in the quarterfinals of the UEFA Champions League. The clash at the Etihad saw a defensive masterclass by Atletico who appeared to have made the trip to Manchester with the sole aim to deny City to score in the 1st leg. With the match appearing to inch towards a stale draw, Phil Foden created an opportunity for the Citizens which was converted by Kevin de Bruyne as the home side caught a crucial goal against the Spaniard. As a result, Manchester City eked out a narrow 1-0 win ahead of the 2nd leg in Madrid. The 2nd leg between Champions of England & Spain will be played on 14th April.

Liverpool meanwhile made a trip to Lisbon to take on Benfica in the 1st leg of the quarterfinals and returned home after a successful campaign winning the match 3-1. Ibrahima Konate & Sadio Mane's early strikes gave the visiting side a 2-0 lead in the opening half-hour of play. Benfica was not ready to give so easily as they fought back with a goal at the start of the 2nd half. With pressure mounting against the visitors, Liverpool punched in with a strike from Luis Diaz in the closing moments of the game to seal the first leg 3-1 in their favour. The return leg at Anfield will be played on 14th April.
