Raphael Varane announces retirement from International football

Varane became only the fourth player to be a World Cup champion and Champions League winner in the same year, after Christian Karembeu (in 1998), Roberto Carlos (in 2002), and Sami Khedira (in 2014).

French footballer Raphael Varane announced his retirement from international football on Thursday after what has been an illustrious career for the 29-year-old.

His international career started almost a decade ago when he was a teenager and got to play a part in France's 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. Varane then went on to establish himself as a regular starter for both Real Madrid and the French national team.

Varane played 93 matches for France and featured in 4 major tournaments during his international career winning the elusive FIFA World Cup in 2018 as well. Varane became only the fourth player to be a World Cup champion and Champions League winner in the same year.
