Wayne Rooney has stepped down as the manager of embattled League One club Derby County. The former Manchester United and England great ended his playing career with the Rams before taking his first step in management with the club in November 2020.
Derby was plunged into administration at the start of last season and were relegated from the Championship despite Rooney's efforts to keep them up after they were docked 21 points because of its financial problems.
In a statement Rooney said that the administrators tried tremendously hard to change his decision but he had made up his mind. Chelsea are preparing to make a move to sign England forward Raheem Sterling after approaching Manchester City over the signing.
The 27-year-old forward has already held the discussions with Thomas Tuchel and has been a key target for the Blues and Todd Boehly has contracted the City with a view to wrapping up a deal to sign the winger.
Sterling joined the City from Liverpool for £49m in 2015 on a 7-year-contract and scored 131 goals in 339 matches for the City.
After allowing Beligian striker Romelu Lukakau to join Inter Milan, Manchester City are looking to solidify their attacking ranks and Sterling could be the first major signing by Boehly. 
Other than Raheem Sterling, City's Nathan Ake is also Boehly's key target.

English football club Chelsea are preparing to make a move to sign England forward Raheem Sterling from Manchester City.
The 27-year-old forward has already held discussions with Chelsea Manager Thomas Tuchel and is a key target for the Blues. New club owner Todd Boehly has already contacted City with a view of finalising the deal as quickly as possible.
With Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku expected to join Inter Milan on a season-long loan, Sterling could be the first major signing by Boehly.
Sterling, who joined from Liverpool back in 2015, has netted 131 goals in 339 games for City. In fact, he has scored 120 goals for the Cityzens under Pep Guardiola, and only Sergio Aguero (124) has scored more goals for the club since the Spaniard's arrival in Manchester in 2016.
Other than Raheem Sterling, City's Nathan Ake is also a key target for the London side.

After signing Fabio Vieira, Arsenal is set to sign the Brazilian forward Gabriel Jesus from Manchester City. According to reports, Jesus has agreed on terms to join Arsenal for a five-year contract and the striker will move for a fee of £45m following a deal between the Gunners and the City.
Speaking to the Arsenal official website, Arsenal's technical director Edu said, "We will now continue to work hard and are looking forward to finishing this transfer window as strongly possible."
Chelsea and Tottenham were also in the contention to sign the Brazilian star.
The 25-year-old striker has 56 caps for Brazil and has 8 goals from 28 Premier League appearances last season.
Jesus will be the fourth major signing of the summer for the Gunners. Marquinhos, Matt Turner and Fábio Vieira have been already signed by the club.

After signing Fabio Vieira last week, Arsenal are all set to complete another big summer signing -&nbsp; Brazilian forward Gabriel Jesus from Manchester City.
According to reports, Jesus has agreed terms to join Arsenal on a five-year contract and the striker will cost &pound;45m following a deal between the Gunners and City.
Under Pep Guardiola, Jesus played across the front three but failed to nail down the No 9 position. He managed 8 goals in 28 Premier League appearances last season. And the arrival of Erling Haaland in the summer meant Jesus was on his way out.&nbsp;
Chelsea and Tottenham were also in the contention to sign the Brazilian star and while he's on his way to London, it's for their city rivals Arsenal.
The Brazilian netted 95 goals in 236 appearances for City after joining them in 2017.
He will be the fourth major signing of the summer for the Gunners. Marquinhos, Matt Turner and F&aacute;bio Vieira have already been signed by the club.

New Chelsea owner Todd Boehly reportedly had a personal meeting with his agent Jorge Mendes and floated the idea of signing Ronaldo. Earlier in the week, there were also reports of Ronaldo's agent offering the 37-year-old footballer to Bayern Munich. The German club, however, rejected the opportunity to sign the Portuguese international. 
According to a report in the Mirror, this didn't go down well with Manchester United and the English club has responded by saying that Ronaldo was not for sale. 'We want and fully expect him to be with us next season,' the source added.
The Red Devils brought Ronaldo back to the Old Trafford last summer by handing him a two-year contract worth £ 500,000 a week. CR7 lived up to the expectations and top-scored with 24 goals. But things kept going bad to worse for United as they finished sixth, 35 points behind champions Manchester City.
