Indonesian Government demands investigation into stadium disaster

The Indonesian government has called on the nation's police to investigate and punish those responsible for the death of 174 people who were killed in a stampede in the city of Malang.

The tragedy happened after fans of home team Arema FC stormed the pitch at the Kanjuruhan stadium after their 3-2 loss to bitter rivals Persebaya Surabaya.

This incident turned out to be one of the worst disasters in sporting history, and the Indonesian government has directed the country's police to punish those responsible for the tragic demise of scores of people. At least two police officers also lost their lives during the disaster.

Many people have also accused the police officials of causing the death of several supporters since they were the ones who set off the panic by firing volleys of tear gas into the packed crowd. Several football fans in Jakarta had gathered outside the country's biggest stadium to revolt against the police officials.

The Indonesian president Joko Widodo ordered an official probe into the incident. However, several human rights groups have suggested an independent investigation, for they want the officials to be held accountable for the use of tear gas as well.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino had also called the disaster a "dark day" for football but said that the sporting body won't be taking any action against anyone.
