However, the South Americans will be mindful of results at recent World Cups given they have been knocked out of the quadrennial event by European opponents since their fifth title in 2002.

Meanwhile, the Luka Modric side set up the quarterfinal clash with five-time champions Brazil after beating Japan on penalties, maintaining their record of never losing a penalty shootout at World Cups.

Though, they have entered the grandest stage as underdogs once again, one would do well to remember how they exceeded all expectations in the last edition as well.

Brazil team news

After Gabriel Jesus and Alex Telles were already ruled out of the World Cup, left-back Alex Sandro is also doubtful for the quarter-final game. He missed the last two games due to a hip injury and will be assessed before the quarterfinal game.

Croatia team news

Borna Sosa and Josip Stamisic missed Croatia's previous game. While Sosa missed the game against Japan due to a virus, a muscular injury ruled Samisic out of the pre-quarterfinals. If fit, both players are likely to get a game in the quarterfinals.

Brazil vs Croatia head to head

In the head-to-head comparison, Brazil have a clear advantage over their European opponent with three wins and a draw in four games.
