FIFA World Cup 2022: FIFA opens up investigation on Argentina-Netherlands quarter-final clash

FIFA has opened up a disciplinary case against Argentina after their players were involved in an altercation with their quarter-final opponents Netherlands.

The global football governing body cited “order and security at matches” in its disciplinary code for charging the Argentina football federation.

The game witnessed a lot of heated moments in the match as the Argentina coach and substitutes were seen encroaching on the field in a match where the Dutch side scored two late goals to force the tie into extra time only to lose the tie on penalties.

Argentine skipper Lionel Messi was also among the World Cup record 17 players or coaching staff members who were shown yellow cards during or after the game.

"Team misconduct charges are routine for collecting five yellow cards in a game and disciplinary cases were opened against both Argentina and the Netherlands," FIFA said.

Both the federations could possibly get 15,000 Swiss francs fine ($16,000) from FIFA’s disciplinary panel.

Argentina will take on Croatia in the FIFA World Cup 2022 semi-finals.
