FIFA World Cup 2022 ENG vs IRN: England thump Iran 6-2 in World Cup opener

Despite two long injury delays in the game, the Group B opener between England and Iran turned out to be an eventful encounter in the end with England coming out as the comfortable winner. 

England ran riot in their opening game of the FIFA World Cup 2022 as they beat Group B opponents Iran 6-2 at the Khalifa International Stadium in Doha on Monday.

Jude Bellingham's opener in the 35th minute was followed by 2 more goals by Bukayo Saka and Raheem Sterling in the 43rd and 46th minute respectively thato put the Three Lions 3 goals up at the end of the first half.

Gareth Southgate's men continued their attacking display in the second half as Bukayo Saka scored his second goal of the night in the 62nd minute to make it 4-0.

Iran got themselves a consolation goal in the 65th minute when Mehdi Teremi put the ball in England's net from close range.

Substitutes Marcus Rashford and Jack Grealish then went on to get themselves a goal each to make it 6-1 which turned Iran's night from bad to worse.

In what was the longest 90-minute game in the FIFA World Cup history courtesy of two long injury delays in each half, Iran got themselves a second goal after John Stones conceded a penalty in injury time. Mehdi Taremi stepped up and successfully converted the penalty to score his second of the night making it 6-2 in the end.
