Defending champions Brazil miss out on Paris Olympics berth, Argentina qualify

In a pivotal match of the South American qualifying tournament, Argentina clinched their place at this year's Olympic Games by defeating the defending champions, Brazil, with a score of 1-0 on Sunday. The match, which held high stakes for both teams, saw Luciano Gondou scoring the decisive goal in the 77th minute, propelling the Argentina Under-23 team to victory.

The outcome was a significant blow to Brazil, a team that has consistently adorned the Olympic podium, securing medals in the last four iterations of the Games. The Brazilian squad, which has been a staple at the Olympics since 2004, faced an unexpected setback, missing out on a direct qualification to the Paris 2024 Games.

Under the guidance of Javier Mascherano, the Argentine squad entered the match against their archrivals with determination, following mixed results in the round-robin qualifying stage, including draws with Venezuela and Paraguay. The win was crucial for Argentina, ensuring their advancement to Paris as one of the top two teams from the South American qualifiers.

Brazil's illustrious history in men's football at the Olympics includes medals from the previous four Games. However, this time, they concluded the qualifying event with three points, trailing behind Argentina and Paraguay. Argentina, on the other hand, secured their spot with a total of five points, edging out Paraguay, who still had a game against Venezuela pending.

Gondou's late goal not only marked a victory over Brazil but also reiterated Argentina's prowess in Olympic football, having previously won gold in the 2004 Athens and 2008 Beijing Games. The 2008 victory was particularly memorable, with Lionel Messi leading the Argentine team to glory.
