Dani Alves: Former Barcelona star sentenced in sexual assault case by Spanish court

In a significant ruling by a Spanish court, Brazilian football icon Dani Alves has been convicted of sexually assaulting a woman in a Barcelona nightclub, receiving a sentence of four years and six months. The verdict was delivered on Thursday by a panel consisting of three judges, marking a pivotal moment in the case that has drawn considerable attention.

Alves, who is 40 years old, stood trial for the allegations stemming from an incident that occurred in the early hours of December 31, 2022. Throughout the trial, which spanned three days earlier this month, he consistently denied any misconduct. Despite his defense, the court's decision concludes that Alves was guilty of sexually assaulting the young woman in the nightclub's bathroom.

The judgment handed down to Alves is subject to appeal, providing him an opportunity to contest the court's findings. Initially, state prosecutors had advocated for a nine-year imprisonment for the footballer, whereas the legal team representing the victim had proposed a lengthier sentence of 12 years. On the other hand, Alves's defense lawyers argued for his complete acquittal or, failing that, a minimal sentence of one year and compensation amounting to 50,000 euros ($54,000) for the victim.

Since his arrest on January 20, 2023, Alves has been detained, with the court repeatedly denying his requests for bail. The judges deemed him a flight risk, particularly given that Brazil, his home country, does not extradite its nationals who face criminal sentences abroad.
