Asian Games medallist and renowned football coach Subhas Bhowmick dies at the age of 72

India's legendary footballer and renowned coach Subhas Bhowmick passed away in the wee hours of Saturday after a prolonged illness. He was suffering from kidney and diabetes-related ailments for a long time. He was 72 years old.

Bhowmick was a member of the team that won a bronze medal in the 1970 Asia Games. Bhowmick made his debut at the age of 19 years from the Rajasthan club and represented India as a mid-fielder. He scored a hat-trick against the Philippines in the Merdeka Cup in 1971.

After hanging up his boots, Bhowmick switched to coaching and made his debut on the field as the coach for Mohun Bagan before joining East Bengal. He was most successful as a coach at East Bengal and guided the team to the ASEAN Cup title in 2003.

He also coached clubs like Mohammedan Sporting, Salgaocar, and Churchill Brothers.
