Ferrari Extends Fred Vasseur's Contract Amid F1 Challenges

Budapest, Hungary (AP) - July 31: In a bold move signifying confidence in leadership, Ferrari has extended team principal Fred Vasseur's contract. Announced just before the Hungarian Grand Prix, this "multiple-year contract" underscores a solid vote of trust in Vasseur, despite Ferrari's unclaimed triumphs in the 2025 Formula 1 season. Lewis Hamilton, supportive of Vasseur, lent his backing last month amidst swirling Italian media rumors speculating Vasseur's position.

While Ferrari's last victory dates back to October, notable competitors like Hamilton and Charles Leclerc still struggle to match the prowess of McLaren's leading drivers.

Ferrari's chief executive, Benedetto Vigna, emphasized the team's intent to acknowledge past achievements while committing to future goals. "It reflects our trust in Fred's leadership—a trust rooted in shared ambition, mutual expectations and clear responsibility. We move forward with determination and focus, united in our pursuit of the level of performance Ferrari has to aim for," said Vigna.

Vasseur has been at the helm of Ferrari since the beginning of 2023. Known for his earlier stint as Hamilton's team boss during the mid-2000s in junior series, Vasseur was instrumental in persuading the racing legend to leave Mercedes for Ferrari in 2025—a decision that drove ripples through the F1 landscape. Previously, Vasseur held roles with Renault and Sauber in F1.

After joining the Italian team, Hamilton has yet to secure a podium finish. In proactive steps, he has been engaging with top executives to advocate for enhancements and to secure a contributive role in the development of Ferrari's 2026 car.
