Kolkata, Aug 14 – Dr. Vece Paes, esteemed member of India's 1972 Munich Olympic bronze-winning men's hockey team and father of tennis legend Leander Paes, passed away on Thursday morning at the age of 80. He had been suffering from advanced Parkinson's disease and was admitted to Woodlands Hospital on Tuesday morning. Dr. Paes shared his life with Jennifer, a former Indian basketball player and captain of the national team. The family's plans for Dr. Paes' last rites are set for Monday or Tuesday, pending the arrival of his daughters, who reside overseas. Throughout his diverse sports career, Dr. Paes was celebrated as a remarkable midfielder for the Indian hockey team. He also played football, cricket, and rugby, serving as president of the Indian Rugby Football Union from 1996 to 2002. As a sports medicine doctor, Dr. Paes contributed as a medical consultant for major sports bodies such as the Asian Cricket Council, the Board of Control for Cricket in India, and the Indian Davis Cup team. He is survived by his son, Leander Paes, who elevated Indian sports internationally as the country's most successful tennis player with 18 Grand Slam titles, comprising eight in men's doubles and 10 in mixed doubles. Leander continued the family legacy by winning a bronze medal in men's singles at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.
