Gabriel Diallo Surges into Third Round at National Bank Open

Toronto, Jul 31 (AP) Towering Canadian tennis player Gabriel Diallo secured a spot in the third round of the National Bank Open by defeating Italy's Matteo Gigante with a scoreline of 6-3, 7-6 (5).

The match, interrupted by rain, was concluded by the 6-foot-8 right-hander from Montreal in 1 hour and 46 minutes.

During the second set, Diallo demonstrated remarkable resilience by saving two set points at 2-5. He then broke back to tie the set and ultimately forced a tiebreaker. Despite Gigante taking an early 5-3 lead in the tiebreaker, Diallo captured the last four points, with Gigante double-faulting on match point.

“Tennis is sometimes pretty crazy with the momentum switches that you see throughout a match,” commented Diallo.

Recently, Diallo celebrated winning his first ATP Tour title in the Netherlands. His upcoming match will be against the winner of the late contest between second-seeded Taylor Fritz of the United States and Spain's Roberto Carballes Baena.

In other second-round action, fourth-seeded American Ben Shelton defeated French qualifier Adrian Mannarino 6-2, 6-3, while sixth-seeded Russian Andrey Rublev emerged victorious against France's Hugo Gaston with a 6-2, 6-3 scoreline. (AP) UNG
