Daryl Mitchell Surpasses Rohit Sharma in ICC ODI Batting Rankings

Dubai, Nov 19 (PTI) Indian cricket icon Rohit Sharma has been nudged to the second spot in the ICC ODI batters' rankings, conceding the top position to New Zealand's Daryl Mitchell. This latest update, released on Wednesday, marks a milestone for Mitchell as he becomes the second Kiwi player to achieve this status, following a stellar performance against the West Indies.

Mitchell's ascent to the pinnacle comes after his outstanding century in the series opener against the Caribbean team. With his seventh ODI century, he has now amassed 782 rating points, narrowly surpassing Rohit by a single point. Rohit's tenure as the leader in the rankings was a brief three-week stint.

Mitchell joins the ranks of New Zealand cricket greats, as only he and Glenn Turner have ever held the No.1 spot in ODI batting rankings. Turner achieved this accolade back in 1979. New Zealand luminaries such as Martin Crowe, Andrew Jones, Roger Twose, Nathan Astle, Kane Williamson, Martin Guptill, and Ross Taylor all reached the top five in their careers, yet never claimed the summit.

In other rankings movements, Afghanistan’s Ibrahim Zadran fell one spot to third, while Indian stars Shubman Gill (4th), Virat Kohli (5th), and Shreyas Iyer (8th) remain firmly in the top 10.

Pakistan also saw noteworthy advancements on the list following their successful 3-0 series against Sri Lanka. Mohammad Rizwan climbed five places to share the 22nd position, while Fakhar Zaman improved to the 26th spot. On the bowling front, spinner Abrar Ahmed rose 11 places to land in ninth, and Haris Rauf moved up five rungs to 23rd, as Afghanistan’s Rashid Khan leads the ODI bowlers' rankings.

Meanwhile, the conclusion of the India-South Africa Test in Kolkata saw several players improve their standings. Proteas captain Temba Bavuma broke into the top five of the Test batter rankings for the first time, thanks to his resilient 55 not out in the match's second innings.

Shubman Gill of India ascended two positions to secure the 11th spot despite sustaining an injury during the game. Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto advanced four places to share 34th position following his century against Ireland in the Sylhet Test.

India's Jasprit Bumrah preserved his status as the No.1 Test bowler after claiming six wickets at Eden Gardens. His compatriots, Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja, made significant headway, moving to 13th and 15th, respectively.

From South Africa, Marco Jansen climbed one place to 11th among Test bowlers, while Simon Harmer made a notable leap of 20 spots to reach 24th. Additionally, Jansen edged up to fifth place in the Test all-rounder rankings.
