Nic Maddinson Triumphs Over Cancer, Returns to Cricket

Cricketer Nic Maddinson overcame testicular cancer and returned to cricket. The 33-year-old endured chemotherapy as cancer spread to his lungs and lymph nodes. Encouraging early detection, he resumed training with New South Wales after successful treatment.

Nic Maddinson Triumphs Over Cancer, Returns to Cricket

Melbourne, Oct 17 (PTI) Australian Test cricketer Nic Maddinson recently disclosed that he has successfully undergone chemotherapy after being diagnosed with testicular cancer earlier this year, allowing him to return to his cricket career.

The 33-year-old Maddinson, who has represented Australia in three Test matches and six One Day Internationals (ODIs), was removed from the New South Wales cricket squad in March of this year, following which he received medical treatment.

"Finding out that I needed chemotherapy was challenging to accept. The cancer had spread to some of my abdominal lymph nodes and a lung, which was intimidating," Maddinson told cricket.com.au.

This period was particularly tough for the cricketer, who had played for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in three matches during the IPL seasons of 2014 and 2015, especially as his wife Bianca was expecting their second child at the time.

"Around the second or third week, I lost all my hair and was feeling quite unwell. To manage the side effects, I took certain steroids, but they often kept me awake at night. I would sleep until about 1 am, but sometimes I would be up until 6 am. I found this difficult. I was extremely exhausted and felt like I needed to sleep around the clock. Those nine weeks felt incredibly long and slow," he recounted.

Fortunately, the chemotherapy delivered successful results, and Maddinson is now poised to resume his professional journey in cricket.

The left-handed batsman returned to training on the field with his New South Wales teammates this Thursday.

"Realizing that I detected it as early as I did, and it had still spread to other areas, that was indeed frightening. It's crucial to get checked if you're ever concerned about anything," he advised.
