IPL 2024: Two bouncers to be allowed, impact player rule to continue

IPL organisers have amended the rules of the game. Bowlers will now be permitted to throw two bouncers per over to ‘facilitate a more even contest,’ as per ESPNcricinfo.

The rule has been tested in India’s domestic cricket tournaments. IPL organisers have also retained the impact player rule from the last edition. This allowed teams to bring in a substitute through the game in crunch situations.

The new rule comes as T20 cricket has been increasingly described as “a batter’s game.” After being tested in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, some players have welcomed the change.

“I do feel two bouncers an over is very much useful, and I feel it's one of those things which gives the bowler an added advantage over batsmen,” Indian cricket Jaydev Unadkat told ESPNcricinfo.

Organisers explained the impact player rule was designed to “add a new tactical, strategic dimension to the game.” As per the rule, both teams name four players outside their playing XI. These substitutes can be called into the game for “impact.”
